This is a fun site w/good advice! My 20 y.o. son was on his way to an interview at a major supermarket chain, where he'd be getting flexible hours and at least $2/hr more than his current fast food job.

My husband and I thought he knew how to dress, but he first had on a t-shirt and shorts! His girlfriend and my husband talked to him, so he changed to jeans and a weird sweater. *sigh* Finally, he was enticed to wear a wrinkled button down shirt (silvery gray), black khakis and a tie. Not AS bad but no prizes. Then he tops it off with dirty, white high tops with black laces!

He argued the whole time how "he wouldn't have to dress up for the interview--not until he gets the job" (they require a white shirt, black slacks and shoes and a tie). "You probably won't GET that far, with this outfit. You're giving the idea that you don't care about the job, or respect the interviewer.

This went over like a lead balloon and luckily, the interviewer was busy and rescheduled it. I'm sending him a link to this site, as well as the company's and a couple other ones on appropriate dress.

Back in MY day...as they say...we (even the hippies) would never have shown up for an interview like that. What gives?

Thanks for the great advice!

How far apart is the edge, from the cutting edge and ultimately the bleeding edge? While the suit may be a thing of the past, common sense rarely goes out of style. Adding a flare of personality (maybe a trademark color or accessory) is very different then demonstrating your inability to use an iron, or for that matter a washing machine.

Think less about the actual dress code and more about the image you want to portray. Align the image you desire to the company you pursue. If dressing for the job you want feels wrong, uncomfortable or stifling, it is likely a mismatch.

Just take a minute to look at yourself before you leave the house. Ask yourself, "What would my mom say?", interpret the answer you hear... however you want.
