Donna -- Another good article full of practical advice. Glad I found this site.

(Was actually looking for you--we worked on some articles for Target Marketing back in the last decade--and Target Marketing just reached out to me today at my new company.)

Keep up the fine writing...Stephen

Albert, I, too, was surprised by my sources who said that part about kissing the boss's butt. I think they were referring to the fact that this economy is so difficult and the job market so tight, that making a boss happy has become very important, perhaps more important than it's been in the past. Also, some employees actually need to be micro-managed, as was stated in the article. Before heading out the door, an employee first must decide if his/her own performance is prompting the micromanaging. But for those employees who clearly don't need micromanagement, I agree with you, they should run screaming outta there. Managers who engage in needless micromanagement surely can ruin a good employee's self esteem and confidence.

RE: Being Professional, or being a Fashion Statement at work

Certainly being and looking like a woman at work is well, fine and good.....up to a certain extent. While our world is changing low necklines, short skirts and tight tops still doesn't cut it, nor will it ladies. It is more than about fashion! It's about image. It is about being creditable, making a statement, breathing confidence, grace and your ultimate statement you know what your doing, and you are serious about what you do.

Having a somewhat conservative, yet fashionable dress (or skirt and blouse), along with a blazer, will fare you well. Hair, nails, nylons, heels, packaged image look, as well as being prepared on the topic present you as your personal best, pulled together tightly! Never forget that blazer!!! How many men do you know in Fortune 500 compannies as CEO's that come to work daily and meet with the CEO's in their T-shirt and jeans? The more money you wish to make, the higher viablitiy you wish, the more you need to present and act the image of the role.

Look, act, think professional ladies....it will fare you with a larger salary and you will meet your career goals.

Best Wishes to all this 2010! Happy Promotions!

Great post and a lot of good points. The "soft skills" are lacking in many of the current generation. I'm constantly amazed at younger folks' lack of writing skill/knowledge. Technology, like texting/IMing/spell-check, have affected people and not necessarily for the better. As mentioned, employers need to lay out their expectations of this new generation of workers, and also need to explain those expectations.
Best wishes,
Troy

I think this is absolutely true about color affecting our environment. They are a subtle asset that decision makers need to be shown. Nice article!!
